Corner Brook Pride Inc. - Our Founding
In 2009, a grass roots Pride parade initiated by Matthew Follett and supporters led to the awakening of the City of Corner Brook in recognizing a need for the LGBT community to come together and have an annual Pride event. However, due to Follett having other prior committments and not living within the province no Pride events were being arranged for 2010. This led Follett to hand over the reigns of any potential Pride events being established to volunteer Christian Corbet.
In early 2010, Christian Corbet approached numerous individuals to create a formal Pride organization but wide-spread community involvement was sparce. Forging ahead Corbet worked diligently with a few dedicated members of the community in creating a formal Corner Brook Pride. In the spring of 2010 Corner Brook Pride Incorported was formed and was the first legally incorporated non-profit Pride organization registered in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This set a precedent for Pride and encouraged St. John's to legally register their Pride organization as well, establishing two legal entities representing the LGBT community across the province.
Since it's inception Corner Brook Pride Inc. has taken on the abbreviations "CB Pride" and "CB Pride Inc." CB Pride has created several firsts, they include:
- First offical Pride Week Proclamation signed by Mayor Greeley in 2010.
- First official Pride Flag Raising in Corner Brook, 2010.
- First offical Pride Parade and Festival, 2010.
- First Day of Purple Event, 2010.
- Established Bully Alarm, 2010.
- Established the first LGBTQA Fonds in the province, Corner Brook Museum and Archives, NL.
- First official Day Against Homophobia Week Proclamation signed by Mayor Greeley in 2011.
- First LGBTQA Meet & Greet held in Corner Brook, 2011.
In addition to these achievements CB Pride works with insitutions such as International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) and other professional supporting bodies dedicated to the LGBT community.
Corner Brook Pride Inc. is privately funded and its Directors and Volunteers work in a non-paid capacity. Corner Brook Pride Inc. works with the community at large extending invitations to everyone in order to establish events and further educating the community about LGBTQA issues among other topics in Western Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond!
We rely completely (100%) on our volunteers and the kind co-operation of other parties to help make Pride events a reality and enjoyable for all.
